Captain Oliver Norris led from the front to inspire Whitgift to their first Under 18s Schools Cup success in eight years with a 32-22 victory over holders Warwick at Twickenham.

It was a fitting moment for Norris, who began the scoring with the game’s first try, having watched from the crowd when the South Croydon school last lifted the Under 18s trophy in 2011.

The tight game was decided by Aristot Benz-Solomon’s late Whitgift try and 10 points from the boot of Ben Fitzgerald, denying Warwick a third title in a row following their wins in 2018 and 2017.

Both sides arrived at Twickenham after convincing semi-final wins, Whitgift thrashing Marlborough College 57-15, while Warwick disposed of Woodhouse Grove 36-24.

Earlier in the day Wellington College added a fifth U15 Schools Cup title to their trophy cabinet with a 23-5 win over Northampton School for Boys (NSB).

Elaine Logan discusses the benefits of and challenges to the independent education sector, and why her time at Glenalmond College was so rewarding

Q&A: Elaine Logan, Glenalmond College

What benefits are there to the independent sector?

When parents are paying towards their child’s education, or have sacrificed a lot for it, it makes it a bit more real and ensures the child is more focused. Children in independent schools are extremely motivated and have a real love of learning so put in the effort to ensure they are successful at whatever they choose to do.

Is there anything you think the independent education sector should improve?

It is vital that the independent sector continues to be as accessible as possible. Bursary provision and a clear commitment to the local communities they operate within is something I tried hard to achieve at Glenalmond. Breaking down prejudices and ensuring that our young people understand every echelon in society can only be positive for the future.
